The Arcade Durham Has Been Missing

Super Rad Retro Lounge is about 25–30 minutes east in downtown Raleigh — 30+ restored classic arcade games, nine pinball machines, air hockey, and craft cocktails on Glenwood South. Worth every mile.

Close Enough to Be Your Regular Spot

If you live in Durham and you have been looking for a real retro arcade — the kind with original cabinets, working CRT screens, and machines that have actually been restored rather than just plugged in and crossed fingers — Super Rad Retro Lounge is the answer. It just happens to be across the county line.

From central Durham, the drive is roughly 25–30 minutes heading east on I-40 or via the Durham Freeway (NC-147) into downtown Raleigh. Glenwood South sits just off the highway, and parking is straightforward once you know the area. That is about the same time it takes to decide where to eat on a Friday night — except at the end of this drive, there are 30+ classic arcade games and a full bar waiting for you.

Duke students, Durham locals, and Triangle transplants have all made the trek and come back. This page is our honest attempt to give you the information you actually need — how to get here, what is worth the drive, and how to make a full night of it.

Why Drive From Durham Instead of Staying Local?

That is a fair question, and we will give you an honest answer. The Triangle has options for going out, but a dedicated retro arcade bar — with actual restored originals, a curated pinball row, and a full cocktail program — is genuinely rare. Most arcade-adjacent experiences in the area are either attached to a chain entertainment complex, running on emulators, or focused more on redemption tickets than the games themselves.

Super Rad was built differently. The owners are collectors and restorers. Every cabinet on the floor has been gone through: boards recapped, monitors aligned, controls rebuilt. The result is that a game of Galaga at Super Rad plays the way Galaga was meant to play. Same with the pinball machines — these are not decorations. They are maintained and playable.

Add Glenwood South to the equation and the drive starts making even more sense. You are not just making a trip to an arcade; you are dropping into one of the most walkable, lively nightlife districts in the Southeast. Dinner before, drinks after, live music around the corner — it is easy to build a great night around a 25-minute drive.

Getting Here from Durham

Parking, transit, and what to do once you arrive.

The Drive

From central Durham, take I-40 East or the Durham Freeway (NC-147) toward downtown Raleigh. The trip is about 25–30 minutes depending on where in Durham you are starting and what time you leave. Coming from Duke's campus, budget a bit more time during evening rush hour; after 7 PM the drive tends to be smooth.

Parking

Glenwood South has several parking decks and surface lots within easy walking distance. The City of Raleigh's Glenwood South Deck on Tucker Street is a reliable option. Street parking is available but fills up on weekends. We recommend arriving a few minutes early so parking does not cut into your game time.

By GoTriangle Bus

GoTriangle operates routes connecting Durham and downtown Raleigh, including express service along the I-40 corridor. Check the GoTriangle app or website for current schedules — it is a solid option if you want to leave the car at home and enjoy a couple of cocktails without worrying about the drive back.

Once You Are Here

Super Rad is at 106 Glenwood Ave, right in the heart of Glenwood South. The block is walkable, which means you can grab dinner at one of the nearby restaurants, head to Super Rad for games and drinks, and keep the night going afterward without moving the car. Get directions →

Make a Full Night of It

One of the best things about Super Rad's location is that Glenwood South handles everything else. The street is lined with restaurants ranging from casual to upscale, rooftop bars, and live music venues. A night out from Durham can easily look like this: head east around 6 or 7 PM, grab dinner on the block, spend a couple of hours at the arcade, then wander Glenwood South for a nightcap or live music before making the easy drive home.

If you are coming as a group — for a birthday, a bachelorette, a team outing — Super Rad can accommodate private events and has hosted plenty of Durham visitors who wanted something more memorable than a standard restaurant dinner. Check upcoming events or ask about hosting a private event.

For Duke students and Durham-based families, the timing options are flexible. Super Rad is family-friendly until 8 PM, making it a solid early-evening plan if you are bringing kids who want to try a real Pac-Man cabinet. After 8 PM, the venue shifts to 21+ for the bar crowd.
